  • Dancing in public is considered improper
  • In public places shorts and skirts must always be the appropriate length and shoulders should never be uncovered
  • Clothing must not indecently expose parts of the body, be transparent, or display obscene or offensive pictures and slogans
  • Swimwear may not be worn outside the beach or swimming pool
  • Nudity is strictly forbidden and can be punished by imprisonment or deportation
  • Swearing is illegal
  • Aggressive or offensive gestures are considered a public offence
  • Holding hands for married couples is tolerated but kissing and petting are considered an offence in the public eye
  • Public displays of affection and sexual harassment or randomly addressing women in public can be punished by imprisonment or deportation
  • Unmarried couples are not allowed to live together
  • Homosexuality is prohibited
  • Drinking alcohol in public is prohibited
  • You can drink alcohol in licensed bars and restaurants or you may purchase alcohol from designated stores
  • Drinking alcohol in Sharjah is illegal
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol is a crime
  • Respect must be shown to the country’s leaders, flag and national emblem
